• I flashed all, it is on but I do not see the camera app: reboot into recovery, flash again the gapps without wipes, restart then should be visible the Camera app.

• Download Android SDK, AVD Manager (Windows, Mac dan Linux)
  Link Android SDK, AVD Manager
• choose the download according with the OS you are using

• Extract the file and run "Setup.exe SDK" (click 2X)

• next .. If you get an error message stating "Failed to fetch url ... BLA .. BLA .. BLA .." then must exit from the Setup program. (calm, this error is also the part from the process) ...

• Follow these steps:

-Close the "Refresh Sources" windows (just close the process that error above).
-Cancel the "Choose Packages to Install" window.

-Select "Settings" that is on the left-bar, "Android SDK and AVD Manager" windows.
-Check the box labeled "Force https:// ... sources to be Fetched using http:// ..."

• Click "Save and Apply"
• Close and restart the SDK Setup program
• Click again duax file "SDK Setup.exe" in the folder point no.2 above

• Select the packages you want installed. Select only the package that you needed

• if only interested in trying out Android 2.1 (eclair) Emulator, reject everything except "Android Platform SDK 2.1. API 7, Revision 2" to select each item and then select the option Reject / reject. then click "Install".

• Let the selected packages to download and install then close the "Installing Archives" window.

• Create an Android Virtual Device (AVD) by selecting New "Virtual Device" from the sidebar, now click on NEW.

Scaling SongPop to 60 million users with App Engine and Google Cloud Storage

Continuing our Developer Insights series, today’s guest bloggers are Olivier Michon, CTO, and Alexis Hanicotte, software engineer, from Fresh Planet, maker of the popular mobile application SongPop.  SongPop is a social application where players compete to be the fastest to guess the name of a song or artist.

SongPop is a social mobile app where players compete on who will be the fastest to guess a songs’ artist or title. It is a huge success for our very small team of just 6 engineers. We now have more than 60 million users, were the number 5 most downloaded iOS game of 2012, and went from 0 to more than 10k queries/second on our servers in less than 6 months. This has been made possible in large part because we run on Google App Engine.

App Engine allows us to quickly prototype, iterate and release our games.  We’ve been accumulating experience with the platform since 2009, but really saw the power of autoscaling once SongPop became a hit.

Our experience scaling with App Engine

SongPop was released in May 2012.  During our growth to our first 100,000 daily active users (DAU), our App Engine backend scaled smoothly.  This allowed us to spend our time making actual improvements to the game experience, while our user growth continued at a rapid pace.

We opened a Premier Account with App Engine around the time when we reached 100,000 DAU which gave us access to live customer support.  It came in handy when we encountered two downtimes, with one lasting just 10 minutes and the other for 1 hour.  But we were able to promptly reach Premier Support and had Google engineers investigate these issues with us.  

Once we reached 500,000 DAU, we applied a variety of optimization ideas to reduce latency.  For example, we used to have user data spread over many models, but we combined them into a single entry in the Datastore to reduce read operations.  We also often needed the list of a user’s opponents, so instead of querying every time, we cached this result using Memcache.  It only took one engineer and just 4 days of work to reduce the latency with these optimizations.   

As we reached the milestone of 1 million DAU, some Datastore queries (used to find random opponents in the game) showed high latencies and a high rate of timeouts.  We had to enforce deadlines, implement better fallbacks and identified, with the help of Premier Support, that degraded performance came from the fact that our queries were relying on many different indexed properties.  So the solution was simple - either add a composite index with all the properties we needed or combine into a single one.

Using App Engine + Google Cloud Storage

For each game session, our users need to download song samples in order to play. It is critical that this data gets delivered fast and reliably wherever the user is located. We chose to use Google Cloud Storage for this use case.   It has proved to provide high performance content delivery, as we have been able to serve 17 terabytes/day of songs and images worldwide.

In addition to its reliability, Cloud Storage is great because of its integration with App Engine. We can easily read and write files from our application to Cloud Storage using the same syntax as we would use to write local files (using Python). We found it intuitive and convenient because you do not have to manage opaque keys to retrieve your files (just use the path you specified), and you can browse your files through a directory-like structure. Cloud Storage also allows you to manage access rights, can be used with Google BigQuery, and it is priced affordably compared to other solutions we considered.

Long live App Engine!

When we speak to other game developers, we always recommend that they use App Engine.  We’ve used other services such as EC2 from Amazon Web Services for other games before, but we’ve found App Engine to be a better service for our needs.  We don’t want to spend time setting up servers and load balancing, when we could instead use that time to build great games and let our service provider handle the infrastructure for us.

When we compare the development of SongPop to stories of other apps, we’re thankful that App Engine allowed us to have only one engineer working full-time on the backend portion of our app.  Even better, he was able to do additional work on adding new features to the game instead of solely focusing on infrastructure issues.  With App Engine, scaling our game was easy.

Others things we want to share

• Do not worry if documented resources limits and rates look too small, they are just there to make sure one app does not abuse any resource, but they can scale. Most of our limits have been increased by 18-fold! We had days where we made 230,000,000 UrlFetch API calls, for instance.


• The Location headers is a really great feature,  because it is easily accessible for a wide variety of use cases, such as selecting users’ opponents or building their game profile.

Getting auto scaling just right is one of the hardest things about cloud apps. Scale too slowly and you cant meet customer demand. Scale too quickly and you pay for more than you need. For new applications in particular, you might need to have strong prediction skills to provision the correct number of virtual machine (VM) instances to meet customer demand.



We don’t want your Google Compute Engine app to break when it faces increased demand but, just as importantly, we’d like to ensure you don’t pay for excess capacity when you dont need it.



Sure, you could estimate peak load and provision for it. However, if your application’s peak load only occurs during the holiday period, your infrastructure will be largely unused for the majority of the year. Alternatively, you could provision for estimated average use. But then, by definition, half the time your infrastructure will be over-provisioned and half the time it will be under-provisioned, so you end up disappointing either your customers or your managers all the time.

Federal Government To Issue New Guidelines For Banks Dealing With Legal Marijuana Businesses

Now that marijuana for recreational use is doing booming business in Colorado where it’s legal (with Washington State to join it eventually) the federal government is getting around to answering some weighty questions. Namely, how will it deal with the revenue coming in from pot sales?

United States Attorney General Eric Holder said yesterday that the federal government is working on new regulations that would make it easier in those states for businesses dealing in legal marijuana to have access to banks, reports USA Today, which is likely welcome news in Colorado and Washington.

Holder told an audience at the University of Virginia that Justice and Treasury department officials will soon issue the new guidelines in order to try to help banks decide what to do in situations involving legal marijuana businesses.

“It’s an attempt to deal with the reality that exists in these states,” Holder explained, referencing not only Washington and Colorado but the 18 other where marijuana is legal for medical use, as well as Washington, D.C..

“There is a public safety component to this,” he said. “And you don’t want just huge amounts of cash in these places. They want to be able to use the banking system… . Huge amounts of cash, substantial amounts of cash, just kind of lying around with no place for it to (be) appropriately deposited is something that would worry me from just a law enforcement perspective.”

And besides the piles of cash lying around being an inconvenience for those banks, it’s not so easy for marijuana businesses to even convince banks to deal with them in the first place. Because while certain states can legalize pot for either medical use or just recreation, federally insured institutions were feeling a bit squirrelly about accepting drug money.

Officials in Washington State had been wondering whether or not Bank of America will take its tax revenue funds from pot for fear of getting in trouble with the feds. And in Colorado, many owners of pot businesses had to pay taxes in cash because banks refuse to do business with them for the same reason.

How To Easily Overclock Your Nokia N900 In Under Two Minutes

The ability to overclock the N900 has existed for a long time now and we have covered it before. But overclocking the N900 has never been so easy, two simple installs from the Application Manager and a short command via the terminal is all it takes. If you have been wanting to try it out but were holding out because it seemed too complicated, this guide is for you.

However, please note that overclocking the N900 will void your warranty, although it is possible to the flash to the stock kernel/state if you no longer want to overclock your device. Apart from that you also risk damaging your device and losing data. Please continue at your own peril.
That said, lets get started.

• The first thing you need to do is install ‘rootsh’ from the Application Manager, make sure you have the relevant repositories enabled.
• Next install the ‘Enhanced linux kernel for power users‘ from the ‘System’ section in the Application Manager. It supports overclocking upto 1.15 Ghz.
• Restart the device.
• Now install ‘Enhanced kernel for power users (settings)‘.
• Open the X-Terminal and enter the following command.

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load ideal

This will load the ideal profile which overclocks your phone to 850 MHz. At this point if you experience reboots or the phone seems to act funny, try using the ‘lv’ settings that uses slightly higher voltages than the ‘ideal’ profile. If it is still unstable try ‘ulv’. The various presets are ‘default’ – ‘lv’ – ‘ulv’ – ‘xlv’ – ‘ideal’ – ‘starving’.

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv
kernel-config limits 250 850

If the N900 seems stable, you can have these settings as a preset of your own.

sudo gainroot
kernel-config load lv
kernel-config limits 250 850
kernel-config save myideal

With the current configuration, the N900 will resort to the default 600 MHz state everytime it is rebooted. This is done to avoid letting the N900 get caught in a reboot loop. If you are happy with the N900′s performance and stability, you can then also set the N900 to overclock by default on startup. Use the following command:

sudo gainroot
kernel-config default ideal (whichever preset you want to set as default e.g. myideal)
kernel-config show (this will show you your current settings)

If you want to revert to the original settings, here is the procedure to follow. Jakiman over at talk.maemo.org has a very comprehensive guide as well, if you are looking for more information I suggest you give it a read.

One last thing, if you want to configure the N900′s overclocking setting with a visual UI and not the terminal, install QCPUFreq from the Application Manager. Then once you have installed the packages mentioned above all you will need to do is move the slider to overclock to the desired level. My suggestion is don’t go past the 850 MHz mark.
Before you do this, please keep in mind one thing ‘because it can be doesn’t mean, you have to do it!’

Just like the other apps, it is required that you install it on your device and then create an account.
You can even monitor your friends and family members by sending an sms to them. If they reply the sms with a "yes", then you can monitor them provided they have the app installed on their device also.

Features are as follows

• easy to use
• track your friends and family
• locate your phone if stolen
• quite accurate if you have the recent updated version
• Monitor non android phones too since the app is supported on other OS like iOS etc.

This app is free and can be downloaded from the Google Play store.

Like i said earlier, there are huge amount of  apps that can be used to track your phone. However, these ones i have used and tested. They are good and you can try it out yourself. You dont need to install all of them on your device as they can affect the battery life of your device.

Samsung pledges higher dividend in a bid to keep investors happy

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, under pressure to appease investors who have berated it for hoarding the spoils of rapid growth, has pledged to hand out even more profit after almost doubling its full-year dividend to a record $2 billion.

The main rival of Apple Inc has amassed $51 billion in spare cash in recent years by selling as many as one of every three smartphones, but the amount of profit reaching shareholders hit its lowest in 2012 in five years.

Some investors have called for more returns, but the biggest maker of TVs, smartphones and memory chips, has been reluctant to change its payout policy largely because it needs funds for heavy investment.

The maker of Galaxy smartphones, on reporting its first quarterly operating profit decline in two years on Friday, doubled its 2013 dividend yield as planned to 1.0 percent. Investors point out that is still half of Apples 2.0 percent.

"Our goal on dividend payout for this year is to have that significantly increase from 2013, but I cant say for sure how much well be paying," Robert Yi, head of Samsungs investor relations, told analysts after the earnings release.

The South Korean manufacturer declared a 14,300 won per share dividend for 2013, or a total handout of 2.1 trillion won. The amount is 79 percent more than a year earlier but is just 6.9 percent of 2013 profit.

"Samsung is clearly under growing pressure to return more to investors," said Park Jung-hoon, a fund manager at HDC Asset Management.

"With its shares trending down, I think Samsung will have to consider extra measures like a share buyback at some point to address shareholder pressure."

Special bonus

Samsung posted a 6 percent on-year decline in operating profit for October-December to 8.3 trillion won, the company said on Friday, matching its previous estimate.

The figure was brought down by an 800 billion won special employee bonus to commemorate 20 years since Chairman Lee Kun-hee announced a management strategy that the company regards as the catalyst to its recent growth.

A stronger domestic currency also knocked off around 700 billion won.

"It will be challenging for Samsung to improve its earnings in the first quarter as the weak seasonality of the IT industry will put pressure on demand for components and TV products," the company said in a statement.

Shares of Samsung, worth $204 billion, edged up 0.54 percent after the earnings release, compared with the benchmark index which fell 0.64 percent. The stock has fallen 8 percent in the past month on concern over slowing smartphone growth.

Smartphones disappoint

The chip maker said its capital expenditure, a barometer of broader technology industry demand for manufacturing tools such as chip equipment, will be similar in 2014 to the 23.8 trillion won of 2013. Spending on marketing, however, will decline relative to revenue.

"Well actively leverage global sports events such as the Sochi (Winter) Olympics and our retail channels but we will try to raise the efficiency of our marketing spend and lower our overall mobile marketing budget to revenue this year compared with last year," Kim Hyunjoon, senior vice president of Samsungs mobile business, told analysts.

Operating profit at its cash cow mobile division stood flat at 5.47 trillion won, but slipped 18 percent from July-Septembers record 6.7 trillion won as Apples new iPhones drew away sales during the year-end holiday period.

Weaker-than-forecast sales of the Galaxy S4 left smartphone screens sitting in the inventory of unit Samsung Display, where operating profit tumbled 90 percent to 110 billion won.

The company is bracing for tougher competition with Apple in major markets this year, especially in China where the U.S. firm started selling iPhones through China Mobile Ltd, the worlds biggest carrier by subscribers.

Apple is also widely believed to be working on bigger-screen smartphones, Samsungs mainstay products.

Samsung said smartphones will account for 70 percent of total mobile product shipments this year and that it would broaden its tablet line-up with mid- and low-end models and larger screens.

How To Customize All Sounds On Your Android Phone

Now you can customize every sound on your Android device. You can set the volume of ringtones, music, camera click-sounds etc with this little app which was done one of XDA developers programmers.

Android’s Sound Settings page does not allow for a great deal of customization. Currently on vanilla Android, you are able to adjust media volume, ring/notification volume, and alarm volume. As we all know, however, there are many other volumes that you are able to control in different places in the Android OS.

Previously, adjusting these hidden volumes meant waiting for these sounds to take sound focus and adjusting the volume manually with the volume rocker. Now, there’s a better way, thanks to Ultimate Sound Control by XDA Senior Member nagasgura.

So what exactly can you do with Ultimate Sound Control? Well, the root-enabled application lives up to its name by allowing you to view and adjust all possible volumes on your device. This includes media, ring/notification, call, alarm, and system volume—all from one screen. Furthermore, you can easily disable any system sound, such as your camera shutter or low battery sound. (Please note that in some regions, disabling a camera shutter sound is illegal.)

Make your way over to the application thread to get your fix.

Normally, this application comes in two forms: a lite version that allows you to adjust any volume and disable any sound, and a pro version that adds the ability to replace any system sound with a sound of your choosing. However, for the next three days, the developer has generously made the premium version available for free in the XDA thread.

How to install Android 4 4 KitKat apps in other Android phones

KitKat, the latest version of Android, brings great news to Nexus 5 , the first device with Android 4.4 KitKat , but this does not mean you can not enjoy another phone.

Google Tells Samsung to stop Producing Storage Clogging Apps And to Move Closer to a “Pure” Android Experience

This is actually some pretty surprising news, if it is indeed true. According to Re/Code, it appears that Google met with Samsung recently and basically told them to stop producing so many storage-clogging, battery draining apps on their future devices. Samsung is said to be producing smartphones that run something closer to the “pure” Android that Google is offering on their Nexus devices and Google Play Edition devices (also the Moto X and Moto G).

Why is this surprising? Well you may have noticed that Samsung has basically been recreating all the Google apps on their devices lately. And Touchwiz is about as far from “pure” Android as you can get. Although Samsung is reportedly doing a huge overhaul of Touchwiz, but I didn’t really expect it to be close to the “Pure” Android which Google offers. Not that I’m complaining about that though. It’s a great thing for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is faster updates.

Re/Code is also reporting that Google is looking to take more control over Android as more and more no-name Chinese vendors are using Android on their smartphones, but they aren’t using key Google services like Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, etc. Re/Code is also saying that sources are stating “not only will Samsung consider dumping or altering the Magazine UX interface in future devices, but, more importantly, new Samsung devices will spotlight Google’s suite of apps to get movies, music and other content at the expense of its in-house developed software, which was once a proud showcase of Samsung’s evolution as a mobile industry leader.”

Like I stated above, I’m pretty surprise to see this from Samsung. But if the reasoning behind Google doing this is correct, I can understand why Samsung would agree to Google’s terms. As they are one of their biggest partners, and they make a lot more money off of Android than Windows/Windows Phone or Tizen at the moment. This may further cement the fact that they are not dumping Android for Tizen.

Sony Xperia SP to receive Android 4 3 update soon

Sony earlier this month started rolling out official Android 4.3 updates for six of its devices. The Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra were the first to be updated. The Xperia Z, ZR, ZL and Tablet Z followed.

One of this year’s Xperias that was left out was the Xperia SP. But fret not, SP users, as it appears that Android 4.3 for your handset is coming very soon.

A new firmware build (12.1.A.0.253) fort he SP was certified just two days ago, and XperiaBlog reports that this should be an Android 4.3 build. Moreover, an XDA user from Hungary, who seems to be an official beta tester for Sony, recently posted a screenshot showing that 4.3 Jelly Bean is already running on his Xperia SP.

It’s expected that all versions of the Xperia SP (C5302, C5303 and C5306) will be updated to 4.3, although exact timing will probably depend on carrier and country.

LG G Pad Reportedly Coming To Verizon No Word On Release Date

The Wi-Fi only model of LG’s G Pad has been available since November, but we’re still waiting on word of when the mobile data model will launch. While we’re still being left in the dark in that respect, @evleaks is now claiming that when it does arrive, it’ll launch on Verizon’s network. Other details are non-existent considering @evleaks revealed this information in six-word tweet, so we’re just going to have to sit tight and wait for more information.

The G Pad is just LG’s second Android tablet after the LG Optimus Pad, which launched way back in the Honeycomb days. The G Pad features an 8.3-inch screen displaying at 1920×1200 resolution, with a quad-core Krait 300 processor clocked at 1.7GHz running under the hood. The tablet includes 2GB of RAM and 16GB of microSD expandable internal storage, with a 5MP camera taking up residence on the backside of the device.

Hardware-wise, it isn’t too bad of a tablet, but from a software standpoint, it’s already fallen a couple of Android versions behind. The G Pad ships running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which might be an annoyance for some folks who like to be as up-to-date as possible. If you don’t mind picking up the Wi-Fi only version of the device, you might want to check out the Google Play edition, which ships with stock Android 4.4 Kit Kat. This means that not only will you be getting a G Pad running a more recent version of Android, but you’ll be free from LG’s Optimus UI.

The Google Play edition of the G Pad comes with a $349.99 price tag, and at the moment, it isn’t certain how much that price will change with the jump to carriers. It seems safe to assume that the mobile data version will cost more than the Wi-Fi only models just because of the extra hardware, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon (or any other carriers that end up selling the G Pad for that matter) offer a discount with a contract. There’s plenty left to find out about this rumored Verizon launch for the G Pad, so stay tuned for additional details.
