Samsung pledges higher dividend in a bid to keep investors happy

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, under pressure to appease investors who have berated it for hoarding the spoils of rapid growth, has pledged to hand out even more profit after almost doubling its full-year dividend to a record $2 billion.

The main rival of Apple Inc has amassed $51 billion in spare cash in recent years by selling as many as one of every three smartphones, but the amount of profit reaching shareholders hit its lowest in 2012 in five years.

Some investors have called for more returns, but the biggest maker of TVs, smartphones and memory chips, has been reluctant to change its payout policy largely because it needs funds for heavy investment.

The maker of Galaxy smartphones, on reporting its first quarterly operating profit decline in two years on Friday, doubled its 2013 dividend yield as planned to 1.0 percent. Investors point out that is still half of Apples 2.0 percent.

"Our goal on dividend payout for this year is to have that significantly increase from 2013, but I cant say for sure how much well be paying," Robert Yi, head of Samsungs investor relations, told analysts after the earnings release.

The South Korean manufacturer declared a 14,300 won per share dividend for 2013, or a total handout of 2.1 trillion won. The amount is 79 percent more than a year earlier but is just 6.9 percent of 2013 profit.

"Samsung is clearly under growing pressure to return more to investors," said Park Jung-hoon, a fund manager at HDC Asset Management.

"With its shares trending down, I think Samsung will have to consider extra measures like a share buyback at some point to address shareholder pressure."

Special bonus

Samsung posted a 6 percent on-year decline in operating profit for October-December to 8.3 trillion won, the company said on Friday, matching its previous estimate.

The figure was brought down by an 800 billion won special employee bonus to commemorate 20 years since Chairman Lee Kun-hee announced a management strategy that the company regards as the catalyst to its recent growth.

A stronger domestic currency also knocked off around 700 billion won.

"It will be challenging for Samsung to improve its earnings in the first quarter as the weak seasonality of the IT industry will put pressure on demand for components and TV products," the company said in a statement.

Shares of Samsung, worth $204 billion, edged up 0.54 percent after the earnings release, compared with the benchmark index which fell 0.64 percent. The stock has fallen 8 percent in the past month on concern over slowing smartphone growth.

Smartphones disappoint

The chip maker said its capital expenditure, a barometer of broader technology industry demand for manufacturing tools such as chip equipment, will be similar in 2014 to the 23.8 trillion won of 2013. Spending on marketing, however, will decline relative to revenue.

"Well actively leverage global sports events such as the Sochi (Winter) Olympics and our retail channels but we will try to raise the efficiency of our marketing spend and lower our overall mobile marketing budget to revenue this year compared with last year," Kim Hyunjoon, senior vice president of Samsungs mobile business, told analysts.

Operating profit at its cash cow mobile division stood flat at 5.47 trillion won, but slipped 18 percent from July-Septembers record 6.7 trillion won as Apples new iPhones drew away sales during the year-end holiday period.

Weaker-than-forecast sales of the Galaxy S4 left smartphone screens sitting in the inventory of unit Samsung Display, where operating profit tumbled 90 percent to 110 billion won.

The company is bracing for tougher competition with Apple in major markets this year, especially in China where the U.S. firm started selling iPhones through China Mobile Ltd, the worlds biggest carrier by subscribers.

Apple is also widely believed to be working on bigger-screen smartphones, Samsungs mainstay products.

Samsung said smartphones will account for 70 percent of total mobile product shipments this year and that it would broaden its tablet line-up with mid- and low-end models and larger screens.

Free Micro Function Widgets For Nokia Phones

Before I tell you about Widgets, there is something that you should know beforehand and that is about widgets. Widgets are actually tiny, little applications which are generally coded to perform a single function. The concept of widgets gained importance with Yahoo’s Widget services and there was very little probability that the widgets won’t throng the mobile phone market.

Widgets can be micro applications ranging from automatic password managers, currency converters, news headlines retrievers and weather forecast information. Since the applications are very tiny and can be added as add-ons, they are very best suited to the mobile phone application development environment. Once you have signed in for the application on the website, you need to select the services for which you need to use the mobile client.

Using them is very easy, once you are done with the selection part, you can place the widgets on the virtual screen options, place the icons in any order anywhere you want. Once you have finalized, the settings will be imported to your mobile phone. As if know, there are not many widgets services available except the conventional RSS feeds so nothing much can be said about the user reviews and the feed backs. The utility of the widgets will be better understood when more services are being made available.

One of the limitations that I came across is that, if you are reading feeds and you come across a web link, then you can’t open the links right away from the widget service. You will have to copy the link and open in the phone browser. Now that is some serious limitation, atleast for me. Another of the issues is, the application is J2ME based and proves to be heavy on some phone but on the newer version, it don’t think there will be much of a problem.

Fix iPhone iOS 6 1 Unknown Blank Messages Failed SMS And iMessage service

Finally, I fixed this issue of not being able to send and receive SMS, including the blank unknown SMS.
Few days after I updated iPhone 4 to iOS 6.1 I noticed some sets of Problems with the device.

The problems are:

1. I couldnt send SMS and iMessages.
2. Receiving blank SMS from unknown sender.
3. An SMS is being sent constantly to a UK number +447786205094 and being charged for it.

Whether it is an issue with the jailbreak or with iOS 6.1 or even 6.x i dont know.
However, these simple steps outlined below did the trick and solved the problems

Step 1
Launch Cydia and let it download its packages.

Step 2
Click on search and type in Handcent SMS

Step 3
When Handcent SMS shows up, click on it and download to your device. After download, respring springboard.

Step 4
Navigate to the Handcent SMS icon on your screen and click on it. All your messages would be displayed.

Step 5
Finally, try sending a message and you will notice that it will get delivered . You can also try receiving a message. If you cant receive any message, try putting off iMessage.

For the incessant text message to the UK number, it is caused by iMessage trying to activate the service. Just go over to Settings>Messages and turn off iMessage. You can do the same for Facetime. Once iMessage is turned off, you will notice that the messages to the UK number will stop.
Although, the main reason to this problem might be that you have multiple back-ups on your computer for multiple devices.
While restoring contacts and other things, your mobile number may be wrongly displayed on iMessage. To fix this, a reset of network might be necessary and reboot.

There it is folks. I hope this help someone
Please drop comments to educate more on some things that you also did right that fixed other issues.

iPhone 5S and Budget iPhone Launch Date

Apple is really gearing up to make sure that the next iPhone (iPhone 5S) and the low-budget iPhone gets released to the public by before summer end. In actual fact, from a source which we can vouch its credibility, Friday September 6th seems the time these devices would be finally unveiled.

According to the information which emanated from a German site, the statement reads:

The next-generation iPhone will be according to our information on 6 September come on the market. In addition to that day, “two new types of devices” to be available – and thus are not two different color variations or memory meant. This information can reach us from a very credible and serious source.

It is known that iPhone 5S and low-budget iPhone would be shipped with iOS 7 and may also include a finger print sensor.

Apple is taking gesture and security to a whole new level with its upcoming devices. This we observed from the settings embedded in iOS 7 which allows a user to control the phone by nodding and shaking of the head.

Its also possible that the finger print sensor would serve more as a deterrent to erasing of an iPhone 5S by an unauthorized person. This would in fact make it difficult to either sell a stolen iPhone 5S or erase a stolen iPhone 5S. This would in turn reduce the high rates newer generation iDevices would be stolen.

Nvidia Shield review

The good: The Nvidia Shield has a high-quality build with comfortable responsive buttons, and a sharp and bright touch screen. Expandable storage and HDMI output sweeten the pot. Sound quality through the speakers is excellent, and gaming performance is incredible.
The bad: There aren’t enough quality games that support the Shields controller and take advantage of the Tegra 4s processing power. The system is heavy and interaction with the touch screen is awkward compared with standard tablets. The beta PC streaming feature requires high-end hardware investment.
The bottom line: The Nvidia Shield brings console-level quality to portable Android gaming, but it needs a longer list of compatible games before it can truly rival the Vita or 3DS.

When you think "portable gaming," Android isnt usually the first thing that comes to mind. But with iPhones and iPads gobbling up more and more of the on-the-go gaming market that was once ruled exclusively by Nintendo and Sony, Android is getting in on the game. And with the $300 Nvidia Shield, its bringing something entirely new to the table.
The Shield is Nvidias first piece of end-user hardware -- a 5-inch Android "tablet" grafted onto an Xbox-style gamepad.
The result is arguably the most powerful portable gaming hardware weve seen to date -- but one thats launching with only a few dozen games that are optimized for its gamepad controls. Its also got a nifty beta feature that enables the streaming of PC games in real-time -- albeit only from high-end Nvidia equipped gaming PCs, and only on top-notch Wi-Fi routers.
Yes, the Shield can still handle all of your run-of-the-mill Android apps -- Netflix, Gmail, Chrome, you name it -- but the Google Docs crowd can stick with their Nexus 7 and their Angry Birds. When it comes to Shield, only hardcore gamers need apply. But theyre gonna find a solid, well-made portable gaming device that can hold its own versus the PlayStation Vita and 3DS -- if the Android developer community steps up to add Shield control compatibility to enough must-have games.

Design
The easiest way to describe the Nvidia Shield is to think of an Xbox 360 controller with a 5-inch screen attached to its top; however, as closely as it resembles Microsofts controller, there are a few small nuances that set it apart. The dual analog sticks sit directly parallel to each other, like a PS3 DualShock, only closer. The D-pad is located in the upper left and lies parallel to the A, B, X, and Y button array.
A large power button clad with an Nvidia logo sits in the middle and when pressed takes you to the Shield interface hub, with Shield-compatible software, the Shield store, and the PC games streaming interface. Four additional buttons -- home, back, volume, and play, surround the hub button. One speaker each is located directly above the D-pad and face buttons array, respectively.

A true console-quality controller. Nice, comfy, and responsive.
(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)
Shoulder and trigger buttons adorn the top of the device, with a connection array between them. The array includes a microSD slot, Mini-HDMI port, Micro-USB, and a headphone jack.
The Nvidia Shield is heavy. Not heavy for a full-size tablet, but at 1.30 pounds its certainly heavier than any other modern portable console, the heaviest of which is the Nintendo 3DS XL at 0.75 pound. Having said that, I quickly got used to its extra load over the course of a few days and it now feels completely natural to hold and is still lighter than a full-size iPad. However, it could have used a bit more balanced weight toward the front.

Ready for porting!
(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)
The screen tilts back a full 180 degrees and folds on top of the controls when not in use. The underside is a hard rubberized texture, and its contours are almost perfectly hewn to fit my fingers. Alas, the space underneath isnt as spacious as it is on the Xbox 360 controller.
The face buttons also feel a bit flatter than the Xbox 360s and lack that controllers tactility as a result. However, the button placement is intuitive and takes no time at all to get accustomed to; the trigger buttons especially are tuned with a near perfect degree of resistance.

The Shield features some of the nicest triggers Ive ever had the pleasure of pulling.
(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)
As good as the physical controls are, however, using the touch screen proved a bit more ergonomically challenging. Typing is accomplished by either using the analog stick to navigate to each individual letter and pressing "A" or awkwardly tapping on the screen while trying not to let the controller get in the way.
Games like Angry Birds that dont require much precise timing are easier to play with the screen laid flat, but those of a more twitchy variety like N.O.V.A. 3 (not compatible with the physical controls) are a lot more problematic. Its wishful thinking and definitely an engineering nightmare, but Id love to see a "tablet mode" if Nvidia does a version 2. Maybe something in the way of a Lenovo Yoga tablet the folds back on itself could alleviate these issues.

Angry Birds is a lot easier to play on the Shield than more twitch-based touch games like N.O.V.A. 3.
(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)
My other problems with the design are more just quibbles. I miss having a physical volume rocker (pressing the volume button only brings up an onscreen rocker); its absence makes adjusting the volume a two-step process. Also, the start and home buttons should have probably switched places. There were too many times when I accidentally pressed the home button meaning instead to press the start button to pause the game.
Android games
The Nvidia Shield ships with a pure version of Android 4.2.1. Its fully compatible with the Google Play store, and apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus work without issue.

The Shield shows you a list of controller-compatible games currently installed.
(Credit: Screenshot by Eric Franklin/CNET)
All Android games will run on the Shield, but only about 100 are compatible with its controller as yet and only a handful of those are worth your time or money. Among the best of these games are Riptide GP 2, Cordy 2, Virtua Tennis, and older games like GTA 3 and Vice City.
These games are infinitely more playable with a physical controller as opposed to using a touch screen. The Shield needs more of these, but it also needs more games that take advantage of the Tegra 4s power. Riptide GP 2 and the alpha build of Dead Trigger 2 are certainly impressive for mobile games, but many others are not.

Nvidias curated Shield store includes only games compatible with Shields controller.

PC games streaming (currently in beta)
With a Windows PC running at least a Geforce GTX 650 and meeting a few other requirements, you can stream your PC games directly to the Shield, allowing you to play full PC games up to 25 feet away from your router.
The games runs at 1,280x720 pixels and while Nvidia says any PC game optimized to work with a controller should work, some games are more troublesome than others to get up and running.

Youll want to make sure both the Shield and the PC youre streaming from are on the same network before attempting to connect.
(Credit: Screenshot by Eric Franklin/CNET)
Sometimes games just dont work and youre left with only a black screen, or as in many cases, the PC game requires setup that can only be done from the PC. Also, although Nvidia recommends using your routers 5GHz wireless band, my experience during my first week of testing gave me the impression that 5GHz was more of a requirement than a recommendation. At 2.4GHz I got frequent drops when when only several unobstructed feet away.
The aforementioned 25-foot limit for streaming is significantly diminished depending on your home/office layout. Your ability to play smoothly is greatly affected by the strength of your signal and how many walls (including what said walls are made of) are between your Shield and the router. However, when within about 10 feet of my router with no signal obstructions, I had no problems with lag or video artifacting.

How To Customize All Sounds On Your Android Phone

Now you can customize every sound on your Android device. You can set the volume of ringtones, music, camera click-sounds etc with this little app which was done one of XDA developers programmers.

This app gives you total control over the volume and sound of all sound-enabled app.

Android’s Sound Settings page does not allow for a great deal of customization. Currently on vanilla Android, you are able to adjust media volume, ring/notification volume, and alarm volume. As we all know, however, there are many other volumes that you are able to control in different places in the Android OS.

Previously, adjusting these hidden volumes meant waiting for these sounds to take sound focus and adjusting the volume manually with the volume rocker. Now, there’s a better way, thanks to Ultimate Sound Control by XDA Senior Member nagasgura.

So what exactly can you do with Ultimate Sound Control? Well, the root-enabled application lives up to its name by allowing you to view and adjust all possible volumes on your device. This includes media, ring/notification, call, alarm, and system volume—all from one screen. Furthermore, you can easily disable any system sound, such as your camera shutter or low battery sound. (Please note that in some regions, disabling a camera shutter sound is illegal.)

Make your way over to the application thread to get your fix.
Normally, this application comes in two forms: a lite version that allows you to adjust any volume and disable any sound, and a pro version that adds the ability to replace any system sound with a sound of your choosing. However, for the next three days, the developer has generously made the premium version available for free in the XDA thread.

MediaTek Announces Wireless Charging Mobule with both Inductive and Resonance Charging

Nexus-Wireless-Charger

MediaTek has had a solid presence at CES 2014 this year, announcing new chipsets including one specially designed for wearable devices. They aren’t done yet, though. MediaTek has also announced a new wireless charging module that combines both inductive and resonance charging. This single module covers both types of wireless charging and will make it very easy for manufacturers to build wireless charging into their devices.

Inductive charging is what most manufacturers currently use in their devices. Samsung, HTC, Nokia, and just about everyone else that it making phones with wireless charging capabilities have are using inductive charging. The Qi wireless charging standard is based on inductive technology. Resonance charging is another way to do things, and it offers some benefits over inductive charging. Resonance charging creates a larger magnetic field, allowing for more than one device to be charged at a time. The charger just has to be large enough and powerful enough. Because of the larger charging field, devices don’t have to be perfectly aligned with the charging mat in order to accept a charge. Resonance charging also can be carried over longer distances. If the charging mat were large enough, you could charge your devices from across the room. MediaTek has published a paper on the different types of wireless charging if you’re interested in getting some more details.

MediaTek is offering both of these options in one module with the hope that more manufacturers begin using wireless charging. The company has also pointed out that their new module will charge almost any device, old and new. The module can charge devices with different power consumptions from a single coil, so there’s no need for multiple charging mats.

2014 is finally going to be the year that the mass consumer market begins ditching their wires and moving to wireless charging. Intel has announced a resonance charging bowl at CES, and other companies are getting in on the game, too. The new Rezence wireless charging standard is based on the same technology and aims to offer more efficient charging that current offerings. It’s about time.

Google Tells Samsung to stop Producing Storage Clogging Apps And to Move Closer to a “Pure” Android Experience

Samsung-AH-1

This is actually some pretty surprising news, if it is indeed true. According to Re/Code, it appears that Google met with Samsung recently and basically told them to stop producing so many storage-clogging, battery draining apps on their future devices. Samsung is said to be producing smartphones that run something closer to the “pure” Android that Google is offering on their Nexus devices and Google Play Edition devices (also the Moto X and Moto G).

Why is this surprising? Well you may have noticed that Samsung has basically been recreating all the Google apps on their devices lately. And Touchwiz is about as far from “pure” Android as you can get. Although Samsung is reportedly doing a huge overhaul of Touchwiz, but I didn’t really expect it to be close to the “Pure” Android which Google offers. Not that I’m complaining about that though. It’s a great thing for a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is faster updates.

Re/Code is also reporting that Google is looking to take more control over Android as more and more no-name Chinese vendors are using Android on their smartphones, but they aren’t using key Google services like Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, etc. Re/Code is also saying that sources are stating “not only will Samsung consider dumping or altering the Magazine UX interface in future devices, but, more importantly, new Samsung devices will spotlight Google’s suite of apps to get movies, music and other content at the expense of its in-house developed software, which was once a proud showcase of Samsung’s evolution as a mobile industry leader.”

Like I stated above, I’m pretty surprise to see this from Samsung. But if the reasoning behind Google doing this is correct, I can understand why Samsung would agree to Google’s terms. As they are one of their biggest partners, and they make a lot more money off of Android than Windows/Windows Phone or Tizen at the moment. This may further cement the fact that they are not dumping Android for Tizen.

Reviving Samsung Galaxy Note with Custom ROM

Its a great feeling to breathe new life to old outdated devices. After I bought the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for my wife, she passed me the first-generation Note for my disposal. The Note 1 running on the official Samsung ROM is kindda laggy and does not have the same feature list as the Note 2 which was only recently dethroned by the Note 3.

It didnt take me long to do a quick search and find third party firmware that I could easily write over. Voiding the warranty was never an issue since the Note is long past any after-sales support.

There are many custom ROMs to choose from. Some are clean Android stock OS, while some create their own feature list that they feel are the best. For me, I went for the Ultimate ROM which is based on the original Samsung UI but included most of the features in the latest Galaxy devices that are not hardware-constrained.

Multi-window plus floating video window on Galaxy Note 1. Yippee!

In short, my Galaxy Note now works like the Note 2 and S4, except with a slower processor. In fact, the custom ROM allows me to do more. For instance, I can practically use any third-party apps on multi-window, and the ROM removes some bloat on the stock ROM so it appears to run more responsively. And despite 2 generations old, the Note 1 is actually powered by a dual-core Exynos 1.4GHz processor which is close to the latest Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom camera phone. One shouldnt expect to perform miracles on the device, but I am just elated that I can continue to enjoy the latest features of the Samsung Galaxy series on the original Note.

Sony Xperia SP to receive Android 4 3 update soon

Sony earlier this month started rolling out official Android 4.3 updates for six of its devices. The Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra were the first to be updated. The Xperia Z, ZR, ZL and Tablet Z followed.

One of this year’s Xperias that was left out was the Xperia SP. But fret not, SP users, as it appears that Android 4.3 for your handset is coming very soon.

A new firmware build (12.1.A.0.253) fort he SP was certified just two days ago, and XperiaBlog reports that this should be an Android 4.3 build. Moreover, an XDA user from Hungary, who seems to be an official beta tester for Sony, recently posted a screenshot showing that 4.3 Jelly Bean is already running on his Xperia SP.

It’s expected that all versions of the Xperia SP (C5302, C5303 and C5306) will be updated to 4.3, although exact timing will probably depend on carrier and country.

As reported back in November, the Xperia SP should also get Android 4.4 KitKat, but only starting 2014.PhoneArena

LG G Pad Reportedly Coming To Verizon No Word On Release Date

lg-g-pad-google-play-edition

The Wi-Fi only model of LG’s G Pad has been available since November, but we’re still waiting on word of when the mobile data model will launch. While we’re still being left in the dark in that respect, @evleaks is now claiming that when it does arrive, it’ll launch on Verizon’s network. Other details are non-existent considering @evleaks revealed this information in six-word tweet, so we’re just going to have to sit tight and wait for more information.

The G Pad is just LG’s second Android tablet after the LG Optimus Pad, which launched way back in the Honeycomb days. The G Pad features an 8.3-inch screen displaying at 1920×1200 resolution, with a quad-core Krait 300 processor clocked at 1.7GHz running under the hood. The tablet includes 2GB of RAM and 16GB of microSD expandable internal storage, with a 5MP camera taking up residence on the backside of the device.

Hardware-wise, it isn’t too bad of a tablet, but from a software standpoint, it’s already fallen a couple of Android versions behind. The G Pad ships running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which might be an annoyance for some folks who like to be as up-to-date as possible. If you don’t mind picking up the Wi-Fi only version of the device, you might want to check out the Google Play edition, which ships with stock Android 4.4 Kit Kat. This means that not only will you be getting a G Pad running a more recent version of Android, but you’ll be free from LG’s Optimus UI.

The Google Play edition of the G Pad comes with a $349.99 price tag, and at the moment, it isn’t certain how much that price will change with the jump to carriers. It seems safe to assume that the mobile data version will cost more than the Wi-Fi only models just because of the extra hardware, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon (or any other carriers that end up selling the G Pad for that matter) offer a discount with a contract. There’s plenty left to find out about this rumored Verizon launch for the G Pad, so stay tuned for additional details.

Google’s Chairman Eric Schmidt Explains his Predictions for 2014 in a new Video

schmidt

Eric Schmidt is always a fun guy to listen too. In fact, last month he posted a very detailed post on Google+ of how to switch from iOS to Android. Which got a lot of people asking why he didn’t do a switching from Blackberry to Android guide, since he’s been a long time Blackberry user, and still might be. In a recent video, posted by Bloomberg, Schmidt lays out his predictions for 2014. Which is what we are all doing at this time of the year. Some of the predictions include everyone rocking a smartphone, a big investment from Google in social networking, and “unfathromably” important steps in finding additional treatments for cancer and other various diseases.

Just like the rest of us, his predictions are probably not 100% accurate, but it’s still interesting to see what he thinks will happen in 2014. I’d venture to guess that he’s right about the Google-related predictions like making a big investment in Social media. Since after all he is the chairman at Google. Also, Google has been working on Google+ like crazy lately, to make it a huge social network, which is what we all want. I love Google+, I don’t know about the rest of you but I spend the most of my time on Google+ compared to Facebook, or Twitter. We’ve got the full video at the bottom of this post for those that want to see it.

We also already know that Google is working on the next billion users, with KitKat. So I’m sure he’s also spot on with the fact that he thinks everyone will have a smartphone in 2014. With Android 4.4 – KitKat, Google has made Android available on almost every device. Well at least it can run on all Android devices, with at least 512MB of RAM.

How many of you are excited to see what Google does in 2014? Let us know in the comments below.

Good Stuff in Mac OS X Lion

Even though Mac OS X Lion has kept a lot of us busy looking for work-arounds and otherwise solving problems, it also has some nice touches which bear pointing out. Here are a few that I especially like.

1. Finder: New Folder with Selection. Select some files, then choose File/New Folder with Selection (n Items) and it does what it says it says it will do. (The "n" is the number of items selected.)

BETTER: control-click on one of the selected items and choose New Folder with Selection (n Items). There it is, right at the top.

Either way, you get a folder called "New Folder With Items" and it is ready for you to rename (no need to click it, just type the new name).

Youve probably done something like this in iTunes (New Playlist from Selection). Now you can do it in the Finder.

iCal: double-click an event to edit it. Doesnt sound like such a big deal, but in 10.6.8 you double-click the event, then you click the Edit button. Lions iCal eliminates the extra step. Thank you, Lion! You dont need a picture for this, just try it.

Mail: Favorites Bar. Drag your favorite mailboxes ("folders" to you and me) to the Favorites Bar for quick access, then hide the mailbox list so you have more room for mail. Go from this three-column view....
to this two-column view, leaving more room for the stuff you really need (that is, the mail that you are reading).
The important parts are highlighted in red (the Favorites Bar) and yellow (the Show/Hide button, which shows and hides the third pane of the Mail window).

If the Favorites Bar is not showing in Mail, choose "Show Favorites Bar" from the View menu. Note: you can file a message by dragging it onto an item in the Favorites Bar. Very nice.

I hope to find more stuff I like in Lion. If and when I do, I will let you know.

Automatically Open Multiple Websites Part 1

(Theres nothing I like better than saving people time and trouble by showing them a better way to use their Macs. These simple AppleScripts will save you time and trouble day after day after day.)

I am willing to bet that you have a bunch of websites that you look at every day.

Lets pretend that every morning you have a look at Time Magazine, Google News, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. Even if you use a bookmark for each site theres enough mousing around that just opening the sites takes a measurable amount of time. It might not be much, but it all counts. And, you actually have to do the work-- it doesnt happen unless you do the work.

What if you could click a single item in your Dock and have all four of your news websites open, each in its own window, in a nice neat stack on your screen? Wouldnt that be cool?

Of course that would be cool. And, its totally doable. In fact, Ive done it for you, along with two variations (one for Mac-related news sites, and one for sports news). I did it with AppleScript, a very powerful feature of the Mac OS, available on every Mac.

Click to download the AppleScripts. Youll get a disk image. (If youre using Safari the disk image will probably open automatically. If not, or if youre using Firefox, look in your Downloads folder for something called "URL_AppleScripts.dmg" and double-click it.)

Eventually youll see the three items shown below. Theyre AppleScript Applications. Double-click each one to see what it does. Drag the ones you like to your Applications folder. Then, from there (that is, from in the Applications folder), drag them to the Dock. Now a single click in the Dock will trigger a multi-page masterpiece.

Of course you are probably thinking it would be even better if the sites that opened were the ones YOU liked, not the ones I like. Thats easy to do, and Ill write that up sometime soon. If youre in a hurry, tell me and Ill help you out right away.

In the meantime-- isnt this neat? One click opens four websites, neatly, quickly, efficiently. Who could ask for more?

Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 unveiled

Samsung has just unveiled the successor of the Galaxy Camera - the Galaxy Camera 2. The upgrade includes new design, faster processor, double the RAM and storage, newer Android version and NFC connectivity.
The Galaxy Camera 2 comes with a 1/2.3" BSI sensor with 16.3 MP effective resolution. There is also 21x optical zoom lens with and optical image stabilization. Going by the specs, this is the same sensor used in the first generation Galaxy Camera. Other features shared by the two generations include a pop-up xenon flash and a dedicated AF light.

The video recording capabilities have remained unchanged too - you can shoot 1080p@30fps, 720p@60fps and 512p@120fps.
Yet, the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 comes with a faster quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz (most probably of the Cortex-A9 variety), doubled 2GB of RAM and doubled 8GB internal storage. Unfortunately, according to Samsung, only 2.8GB of those are user-accessible, but you can always expand the storage with a microSD card of up to 64GB capacity.

The last of the upgrades brought by the Galaxy Camera 2 are the NFC connectivity, the bigger 2000mAh battery and the newer Android 4.3 Jelly Bean version. Since the Galaxy Camera 2 runs on Android 4.3 and the latest TouchWiz UI, we guess it will support the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, althogh that hasnt been explicitly confirmed. We hope Samsung develops some kind of a remote shutter app for the Gear to make the two work better together.
Finally, the Galaxy Camera 2 employs the same 4.8-inch Super Clear 720p LCD display with 306ppi as the one we saw on the Galaxy Camera.
Unlike the first Galaxy Camera, the new one does not come with a SIM slot, so there is no 3G/LTE network support. Its not impossible that we get 3G-enabled Galaxy Camera 2 at a later state, though.
There is still no information on pricing and availability, but Samsung will be showcasing the device on CES (January 7-10), so well know more in a few days. GSMArena

Asus Transformer Android in Disguise

When the whole world is chasing after iPad 2, I put my buck on the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101, launched in Singapore on 3 May.

A laptop?

If you think that its just a laptop, then you would have been successfully fooled by the "disguise". It is actually a 10.1" living Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet.

The beauty of this particular product is that it comes with an optional keyboard dock that can be folded into place, just like a laptop. While competitors do have keyboard accessories, they are either a wireless version in a separate unit (like Motorola XOOM) or a dock that cannot be folded (like Apple iPad).

Question is: why buy this when you should get a laptop? The beautiful answer is: why not when I can have both! Undock it and its just another tablet. Dock it, and you get a laptop.

A tablet is great for hand gesture interaction, but if you need to do serious typing, its a nightmare. Besides, once the screen keyboard appears, you have little display space left to see what you are typing, not to mention how unfeeling touch keyboards are.

Cameras included. Front and back.

With the Asus Transformer, both tablet and keyboard are one. I can use it on the couch or on the bed, in one piece, without fumbling one or another. The best part: the keyboard dock comes with additional battery juice to power up the device up to 16 hours. Talk about Energons!

Thats all for now. Ill share my experience in detail over the next few weeks once I have sufficient time to work it into my routine. And youll be the first to know from this blog. Till then... Transform and roll out!

Asus Transformer Prime TF201 Quick Review

Last year, I was one of the first 100 to pre-order the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101. It was indeed a transforming experience, being the first tablet with integrated foldable keyboard. I wrote a comprehensive review on it, covering my thoughts on how such a tablet device can work for me.

One year later, the Transformer Prime TF201 is released. I have since sold my original Transformer and bought myself a proper laptop to meet my needs. While a laptop cant last as long as a tablet, nor has much interactive fun apps to occupy your idle time, a laptop allows me to be productive in what I want to do, for instance, drafting this blog entry in a fast food restaurant.

Attention to curvy details

But that doesnt mean a hybrid tablet computer like the Transformer is not useful. If you find an Android tablet very useful but wished for a more integrated device with keyboard that comes with more battery, USB port and an SD card slot, to boost your productivity by a notch, then you should try the new Transformer Prime and power up your mobile lifestyle.

Transformer Prime in Champagne Gold

Heres the list of improvements on this second generation Eee Pad Transformer: Prime TF201.
  • Thinner, lighter and made of brushed aluminium body, giving a much more premium feel. (537g vs. 680g. With dock, the TF201 weighs 1123g. And if its of any interest, the new iPad 3 weighs 652g)
  • More powerful quad-core Tegra 3 processor (vs. dual-core Tegra 2) with an additional low-power core for minor activity to further save your battery utilisation.
  • 8 megapixel rear camera (vs. 5mp on the TF101)
  • The dock lock mechanism is improved, so its easier to dock.
  • New Transformer comes with vibration for silent notification.
  • Trackpad is more sensitive - perhaps too sensitive for some.
  • The power button is now moved to the top instead of next to the volume rockers, so that you will not accidentally press the power button when you wanted to control the volume. But the lock key on the keyboard is still at the same position, and I tend to press that accidentally when I wanted to hit "backspace".
  • Better screen quality thanks to Super IPS+, but still the same reflectivity, which is rather annoying.
  • Plays video files and games smoother

Overall, the new Transformer Prime TF201 offers some improvements compared to the original Transformer TF101. You will not feel drastic benefits if you plan to upgrade, unless you are a gamer, or use the camera to take a lot of important photos, or prefers the weight and design of the new model.

And when you upgrade the Transformer Prime to ICS (Android 4.0), you will enjoy the ICS benefits plus a handful of Asus custom settings, apps, widgets and enhanced notification window, which I find very useful.
  • Task manager widget - easily monitors open apps and kills them
  • Dual battery indicator - no need third party apps
  • Asus notification panel - comes with additional setting icons, similar to Samsung Touchwiz
  • ICS improvements (which I have shared in my Galaxy Nexus review) like Gmail swipe-to-next, Notification swipe-to-remove, nice icons

My experience with the Transformer Prime is dented primarily by the OS, which doesnt seem to run optimally. Issues include frequent lags, unresponsive apps, and slow camera operation like laggy shutter (a far cry compared to the Galaxy Nexus). These problems are not traits I expect out of a quad-core processor. I suppose future firmware updates may smoothen things out.

Transformer Prime on top of the Macbook Air. Just as sexy and stylish.

If you have always wanted an Asus Transformer but never got the chance to own one, the new Transformer Prime might interest you due to its Zenbook-like design. The lack of 3G models might discourage mobile warriors to get one, but casual users can easily rely on their mobile phones Wi-Fi hotspot to provide data connectivity.
